It's good to see the only non-retired steam locomotive still showing off what she can do. This was a great photo you took. :)

I wonder how this would look now that the red Mars Light has been removed.

Hi,
My brother and I are huge train photography fans too. Could you vote on a Union Pacific Commerical Remake? It only takes a moment of your time and would really be helpful. He is using some of his favorite photographs that work for the commercial. Here is the website to vote: [link]
Thank you so much!

Great steam engine, and for backup a centennial? I don't think a train can physically become any more awesome.

844's still rolling! i remember this thing coming to utah once!

The complexity and power of these machines is incredible. the golden age of trains. Great shot, that must of been a lot of fun to chase.
Would steam locomotives work in tandem back in the day like diesels do today?

yep still rollin' - it went thru utah this past april on its way to oakland, ca - then came back thru (UT) in may...
the U P challenger is getting ready to make a run this october (?) currently the world's largest steamer - with an articulated frame. it's in the steam shop under-going repairs and the word on the tracks was that U P was thinking about restoring one of the big boys to operating condition (?) - boy ! gotta have deep pockets to run that stuff.....
i don't think steamers can run in tandem - don't think they can sync then (engines-running together) (?), but i wouldln't know.
but one thing that's cool is watching the people follow this train. some even have cameras mounted on their vehiles....
the only reason i went to see it was that it was close to home
(50 miles)
i'll be headed up to your neck of the woods the second week-end in august - have a funeral - well a memorial service and scattering of ashes to attend to up on union pass, but i think i'm gonna try to spend a couple of days in the hole before......
later
