The Challenger - UP 3985 pulling gout of Speer, WY just west of Cheyenne, WY on it's way to Denver, CO - pulling The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus Train. UP 3985 is the "World's Largest Operating Steam Locomotive
Absolutely amazing! Great locomotive, great lighting, and great composition too. Gotta love the contrast between the sunny and the dark side of the embankment, as well as the water tower in the background.
yeap ! sept 28th....been along time - i think almost 2 years since it last ran (?) i went up there (UP Yard Cheyenne) to watch to the test run a couple weeks before, but i got canceled - they sheared off some engine bolts. i did get to watch them pull it out of the steam shop though and got some nice close up shots of it.
i'm not sure of her (3985) schedule ? you might check upsteam.com but i also saw UP 844 when she headed over to pendelton, ore on sept 8th between medicine bow and hanna, wy it's was pretty sweeet ! she was unassisted - no diesel !!! i had heard that something happened to 844 in green river - she was suppose to run in tandem with 3985 with the circus train ?
They don't have anything planned west for her as of yet, and still nothing through the end of the year this direction. I didn't hear anything about the 844 having problems in Green River, but I did notice that the mainline for 30 miles west and 20 miles east of the yard, as well as the yard itself was very congested. and I dont think the downpour of rain they brought with them helped much. They were scheduled for a 2:45 arrival here in Rock Springs, but didn't show up til almost 8.
STUNNING capture. You did an excellent job of capturing this magnificent machine. The composition, the lighting and the location all work together to create a memorable, remarkable image. The fact that you chose to include a lot of the train definitely makes this image more interesting and provides a sense of depth and purpose to the image. The water tank in the background is a home run. You really picked a gem of a location for this one. This one deserves a great big framed print, hung in a place of honor for all to see. Well done!
thanks ! yeah i scoped out the location awhile back when i heard it was gonna be pulling the circus train into denver once i saw that water tower plus the curve - in knew ! but i'm not to keen on the light (?) i wished it was about an hour later.....i miss my blue sky. but something like this - you don't have much choice. it's been about a year since it ran last....
yeah i had to get that water tank in there i already scoped it out so i new where to be - but it was just a little to early in the morning (?) alot of people like the light, but i wished it was about a hour later. - i didn't get the blue of the sky i wanted. i think i'm done chasing trains for awhile.....(?)
There is that sweet spot at the start and end of the day but we can';t just hang up the camera for the rest of the day. Have you ever tried to put together a series of your photos along with narrative and tried to sell it to say UP or a local paper? You've really got an eye for the trains and rails.
there's alot of foamers out there - UP has their share of photogs...... i'm just shy 2 years of taking pics of trains......even though i grew up along and lived most of my life by the tracks i never gave it a second thought - it was always there - day-night......until i saw UP 844 (steam) then i was hooked. i'm not sure i could do this day in and day out though - i'd like to see and ride the narrow gauge - both the durango and toltec. but one thing the Challenger is huge but yet almost ballerina like when it moves....silent but with strength ! i wonder what it was like to see one of the big boys when they ran......
yeah it was sweeeet ! i thought there would have been alot more people there - at speer ? about 30 - it was way cool when she rolled in - in the dark - almost silent like and everyone was super quiet - real eerie......she left the cheyenne steam shop about 5:50 am and headed to denver at about 7:20 - i wanted more black exhaust, but it was happening - my buddy caught it at ault, colorado with some grain silos - plus i was shooting video too - haven't watched it yet though. i just wished it would have left about an hour later - i really don't like the light and missed getting a blue-blue sky...oh ! well - it's not on my schedule - i was trying to find out when it returns to cheyenne but no-one knew ?
i think it was channel 9 news out of denver (?) it flew right over me, but i wasn't even gonna look at it to see - my eyes where on 3985 - yeah it was a good day for stills - some clouds would have been nice (LOL) the heli was kinda annoying in my vid - it's right in it as 3985 started its run... i wonder where that person shot the vid you watched ? there wasn't that many shooting video - there was a guy behind me up on the hill with a small vid can you send the link to it ?? thanks eddie
scope out your spot ! it's been along time coming to see her rolling down the tracks ! i caught UP 844 between medicine bow, wy and hanna, wy on sept 8th on her way to pendelton, or - and she was unassisted - no diesel !
3985 is coming through KC on the way to St. Louis and on the way back. I won't be able to catch her this week(end) at all since I'm working EMS at the track for NASCAR, but I will DEFINITELY hit her up next weekend all the way from east of KC to Topeka if I can swing it (and maybe even Marysville). I need to get my spots lined up soon...
